neighborhood cleanup 09/12/09

Harrisburg, PA, September 12, 2009 — The Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP) will host its second neighborhood clean-up this summer with support from Classic Landscaping, Bobcat Company and York Waste Disposal. HYP will conduct the cleanup from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 12 with the residents of Emerald Street and North Sixth Street in Harrisburg.

All volunteers should meet at the corner of Emerald and North Sixth Streets. Efforts will be focused on cleaning up blighted properties and vacant lots.

“The residents of this area have expanded their efforts over the last year to bring about change in their neighborhood, and we believe, as a civic-minded organization, that we should assist in any way possible,” said Nicole Borda, President of HYP.

HYP has received considerable support from Harrisburg City Council, Mayor Reed and the business community.

“Although the local businesses that will lend support to this project may not do business in this neighborhood, they recognize the importance of rebuilding and strengthening the Harrisburg community,” said Matthew Crocker, Board member of HYP and event organizer of this project.

“In the end, HYP believes that a clean city will attract new young, talented professionals to work, live, and play in the City,” said Borda.

The Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP) is a non-profit organization comprised of young, active, civic-minded professionals who have a clear vision of Harrisburg's future as a great place to live, work, play, and shop. HYP has more than 600 members that are committed to preventing the migration of educated young people to larger cities (often referred to as “brian drain”) and to encourage those who have left to return to the Central Pennsylvania region, especially, the City of Harrisburg.
